Easter Evidences: Seen Alive
Why the Appearances of Jesus Can’t Be Ignored
11 Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in.
14 She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him.
16 “Mary!” Jesus said.
18 Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she gave them his message.
John 20:11-18, selected scriptures (NLT)
Over 500 witnesses saw the resurrected Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:5–9).
The disciples’ experiences with Jesus after His death are recorded in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). But they weren’t the only ones.
Jesus appeared to:
Believers
Skeptics
Doubters
Even enemies—like Paul
And these appearances didn’t happen just once.
They happened:
At different times
In different places
To different kinds of people
So the question becomes:
What could account for all of these appearances?
Appearances alone don’t tell the whole story—people today will claim that they’ve seen Elvis.
But these appearances of Jesus are different.
They are:
Multiple
Public
Consistent
And grounded in real, physical interaction
One or two people can be mistaken—but hundreds? Across different times, places and locations? That requires a better explanation.
“The empty tomb and appearances have a historical probability so high as to be virtually certain like the death of Augustus Caesar in A.D. 14, and the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70.”
–N.T. Wright, leading New Testament scholar
These weren’t vague visions or private experiences.
The Gospels go out of their way to emphasize the physicality of Jesus.
In these appearances:
People clung to His feet (Matthew 28:9)
He broke bread (Luke 24:30)
He ate broiled fish (Luke 24:41–43)
His wounds were touched (Luke 24:39; John 20:27)
He shared meals together with His disciples (John 21:9–14).
This is not a ghost, apparition, or angelic vision—this is a risen, physical Savior; true appearances of Jesus Himself.
Jesus says, “Blessed are those who believe even though they didn’t see me,” (John 20:29).
The reality is—there’s a lot in this world that’s real, even if you can’t see it. Gravity. Sound waves. The wind. What’s at the bottom of the ocean.
There’s more going on than just what we can see with our own eyes. Reality isn’t limited to what I personally observe.
In the same way, faith in the risen Jesus is not blind.
It is trust based on real events—even if we weren’t physically there to witness them ourselves.
The question isn’t just, “Did Jesus appear?”
The question is:
What do we do with the witnesses who say He did?
Their testimony invites us to the same place Jesus invited Thomas:
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!”
—Jesus, John 20:27 (NLT)
Prayer Spark:
Lord Jesus, we pray that you would make yourself known through your Holy Spirit to us. Give us the assurance of salvation and the assurance of your presence. We choose to place our faith in what is true. We choose to come to you with our questions, evidences, and doubts, and ask that you would bring us to the proper place of faith and trust in you. In your name, Jesus, we pray, amen.
